Ramadan: Moon Mobile

One idea for Ramadan is to make a Moon Mobile in front of a screen of the night sky.

We cut out circles with several different diameters.

We strung some vertically.

Next we hung the moons.

Isra wal Miraj Windows

We were inspired by Pinterest to make more butterfly ornaments.  In past years we used to butterfly to represent the angels for Isra wal Miraj.

We decorated our windows with butterflies and glass coloured beads strung on ribbon.  In the future we hope to add other ornaments that give a celestial atmosphere for the holiday.

Isra wal Miraj Mobile

We decided to add large butterflies to our Isra wal Miraj Mobile to represent the angles that the Prophet (s) observed on the Miraj.

We folded cardstock in half and traced out the shape of a butterfly.

We used a hole punch on the body to string some ribbon through the ornament.

We tied each butterfly to the mobile with the ribbon so that it looks like the angles have landed on the line.  The line is also woven with peacock feathers as though the Buraq had flown around in the courtyard and dropped feathers.

We added crystal lanterns which are mentioned in The Light of Muhammad, the Sira for children by Hajjah Aminah Adil.

For several years I have wanted to have some simple astrolabes added to our mobile display but I have not yet been able to get them made so I printed a photo of an astrolabe instead and added the cutout to the center of the mobile.  For me the meaning of the astrolabe in terms of the night journey is to suggest finding your way on a journey, in this case a journey through the universe with a tool emblematic of the Islamic sciences.

These decorations serve as part of a backdrop for our annual Isra wal Miraj play for children.

Children’s Mawlid

This year for Mawlid we prepared an event exclusively for the children.

We started with salawats.

Followed by face painting.

Followed by a play about the birth of the Prophet(s).

Followed by a masjid cake

Followed by theatrical performance.

We had very nice decorations this year.

Mawlid Mobile: The Cloud

The cloud that carried the Prophet Muhammad (s) all around he world is always the centrepiece of our Mawlid Mobile.  So this year I looked through many examples of Persian art to see what I could do to make our centerpiece look more sophisticated.

I traced the cloud onto heavy drawing paper and then placed 2 more papers underneath and held them together while I cut out 3 papers at once.  The cloud is not symmetrical so I flipped the center paper before gluing them together in the center with a ribbon to attach to the mobile.

Before glueing I painted spirals and curls on to both sides of each cut out.

After everything was dry I folded the outer cut outwards at an angle away from the center paper so that there were 6 arms to the cloud.

The 6 arms give the cloud ornament a beautiful look when it moves.

If you would like to read to your children about the cloud and other elements of the Prophet Muhammad’s (s) birth story please see The Light of Muhammad by Hajjah Amina Adil.

Tomorrow inshallah I will post the details of this year’s Zalmusa fish ornament.

Mawlid Mobile: The Birds

This year for our Mawlid Mobile I used a composite of several different Persian bird paintings and sculptures to make the design.  I was also inspired by our Conference of the Birds project The Pool of Paradise.

I used heavy drawing paper and glued two pieces together for stability. I glued the tail feathers between the two body pieces and the wins on top of the body on opposite sides to imply flight.

This year I painted the beaks green as they are in the Sira for children The Light of Muhammad by Hajjah Amina Adil.

Mawlid Ornaments: All the Fish of the Sea

I am so excited to present our first contributed Mawlid Ornament this holiday season!  I received these photographs yesterday.  These are fish of all the 7 seas that learned of the birth of the Prophet (s) from Zalmusa, the great fish that announced the birth to them in the Sira story.

They used cardstock to make the fish and then hung them with string.
