Gardens of Islam: Kitchen Garden

We recently used some vegetable trimmings to start a kitchen garden.  We were interested in having some growing food in the kitchen and using the trimmings in a way that would reuse the food.  Another way to reuse the trimmings is to compost but we have not tried that yet.

We placed the trimmings in a little water in vessels on the counter and watched them grow.

And grow…

And grow…

We learned recently on an organic and sustainable agriculture course that some vegetables that are harvested in the field will grow back 3 times.  This small kitchen garden in an example of how to glean a fourth.

Our final step was to put the plants into the ground and we hope to harvest some larger vegetables soon.

Please share your ideas for gardening with Muslim children and teaching them about the importance of avoiding waste.
