This surah speaks about believing women who are refugees of war. When they seek refuge they are to be asked about their belief so that their eligibility to marry within the Muslim community can be established. Believing women who seek refuge with believers are permitted to marry and continue their lives in peace under the protection of a believing society. This surah came after the terms of the Treaty of Hudaybiyah ended to give further protection for believing people who were fleeing oppression.
If you would like to read more about these events to your children there is a chapter concerning the Treaty of Hudaybiyah in The Light of Muhammad by Hajjah Amina Adil.
Discussion question: how are Muslim people supposed to support refugees? If you are a believer is it your right to marry a believing person?
