This surah refers to a series of calamities which fell upon unbelievers that opposed the Prophets.
The smoke or mist that will envelop the people may refer to a famine in Mecca in the time of the Prophet Muhammad (s).
The parting of the Red Sea is also mentioned as a calamity that fell upon the army of the Pharaoh.
After this there is a vivid description of the tortures of Hell and the Tree of Zaqqum.
