Today we read the story of how the golden calf was made. In the ancient world it was common to try and make an image of God and an unseen God was a difficult concept to understand.
One man among the believers that had seen the throne of Allah (s) and the angel that looked like a cow made the golden calf so that they could worship the one God with an idol. I asked my son if we do that and he said no we don’t but he did not entirely understand why. We discussed this point at length and it gave me an opportunity to talk to him about idolatry and why we choose to leave God unseen even if we believe only in one God.
This chapter really made me think that it would be excellent to do a lesson series or a children’s book just on this one point of the unseen God and what we can show in art and what we prefer to suggest in art rather than show clearly to have respect for angels and prophets while still sharing their stories.
