18. Illuminated Quran: The Cave

This surah speaks about the story of the cave where some believers fell asleep in a cave for many hundreds of years.  When they woke one of their party went into the town and found the world had changed.

Discussion question:  what would you think if you woke up and found that you had slept for hundreds of years?

This surah recounts the story of Khidr (a) and Musa (a).  When Khidr (a) scuttled the boat and killed a boy and rebuilt a wall Musa (a) did not understand why Khidr (a) did these things.  When Khidr (a) decided to part ways with Musa (a) he explained that he saved the boat from being stolen, the the boy who would grow to be a tyrant and the wall that concealed the inheritance of orphans.

Discussion question:  are there kinds of knowledge that we sometimes have difficulty to understand? When bad things happen do we sometimes ask why?

This surah recounts the story of Dhul Qarnain (a) that imprisoned the monsters Gog and Magog in iron and lead and wore a horned crown.  If you are interested to read the story of Dhul Qarnain (a) to your children there is a chapter about him in My Little Lore of Light by Hajjah Amina Adil.

Discussion question:  what sort of things did Dhul Qarnain (a) see on his many adventures?

Image:  for this surah I have shown a cave and a horned crown for the two stories discussed.

Please share your ideas for teaching children about the Tafseer of Quran for children.
