12. Illuminated Quran:  Yusuf

The 12th surah of the Quran reviews the story of Prophet Yusuf (a).  If you would like to read this story to your children there is a chapter about him in My Little Lore of Light by Hajjah Amina Adil.

In the Quranic narrative Yusuf (a) is thrown into a well by his jealous brothers and sold as a slave in Egypt.

Discussion question: why did Yusuf’s (a) brothers throw him into the well? Why were they jealous?

The surah goes on to tell the rest of Yusuf’s (a) story including his improsonment, his interpretation of the dream of the Pharaoh, his elevation to master of the storehouses and his reconnection with his father Yaqub (a).  All of these points could have their own discussion or you could be more general.

Discussion question:  what do you think is the most important thing about the story of Yusuf (a)?

Please share your ideas for teaching children about the Tafseer of Quran.
